The
birthstone for April is diamond.
The name diamond comes from the Greek word Adamas which means
unconquerable. This refers to the stone’s characteristic
hardness. No other stone compares with a diamond’s property
of hardness. Its cutting resistance is 140 times greater than
that of a ruby or sapphire--the gemstones next in hardness after
diamond.
The tradition of giving a diamond as a betrothal gift dates back to the fifteenth
century. It is alleged that the early Egyptians believed that the reason a
woman wears the ring on the third finger of her left hand is that the Vena
Amoris, or Vein of Love, traveled from the heart straight to the top of the
top of this specific finger.
A
diamond is said to have special power for people born in April.
By strengthening their soul and bringing out their best qualities,
April babies supposedly get great benefit from this stone.
Due to the optical effects, high hardness, and rarity, the diamond is considered
the king of all gemstones. It has been used for adornment since ancient times.
The diamond has the simplest composition of any stone; it is ordinary carbon.
Through the effects of colossal heat and pressure, applied over long periods
of time, carbon crystallizes into the form of a diamond.
