The birthstone for July is ruby.
Ruby is a red gemstone, belonging like sapphire, to the corundum
species. Its name originates from ruber which is Latin for red.
Natural rubies are exceptionally rare. The red color can determine
the value of the stone. Since the color varies within each individual
deposit it is not possible to tell the source from the color.
The designations “Burma ruby” or “Siam ruby” are
therefore strictly erroneous and refer more to the quality than
origin. Inclusions are common. They are not always indicative
of a lower quality, but allow for one to see the difference between
a natural and synthetic stone.
Rubies (like Sapphires) are a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Among the natural gems rubies are only surpassed by diamonds
in hardness.
At Americus Diamond we have rubies mounted in earrings, pendants,
and rings. If you have a special someone with a birthday in July
visit our showroom and let us help you find the perfect gift.
