The birthstone for March is aquamarine.
Aquamarine is related to the Beryl family. It is known for its
blue color. Aquamarines can vary in price and quality. If a stone
is light blue in color they tend to be less expensive. Aquamarine
though can be a very rich blue color which is rare and more expensive.
Most
Aquamarines have been heat treated which is considered normal
practice in the trade to bring out the blue and eliminate
other
colors and help keep the stones inexpensive. Many Aquamarines
are mined in Brazil but they have been found in other countries
and even in the US.
Stones that are extremely fine quality and have not been heat
treated often have an ocean blue/green color. They will also
be free of visible inclusions to the eye. The depth of the color is extremely important. To add depth and bring out the rich blue color cutters often cut Aquamarines in step, rectangular, or oval shapes.
Aquamarine according to legend is a positive stone that brings
health and hopefulness. It was a traditional stone for people
who loved the sea. It has also been known to bring love to
those who wore it.*
